We have just been told about peace, unity and patience, by the president through his parliament speech. But let us speak honestly tonight. A hungry man is peaceful because he has no strength left to protest. A graduate without a job is patient because he has no opportunity left to chase. A business without electricity is quiet because the machines are already dead. Do not confuse silence with satisfaction. They say the economy is improving, then why are markets fuller of sellers than buyers? Why are young people holding certificates but not contracts? Why are families boiling unsafe water in the capital city? They say corruption has been defeated, but citizens still queue for medicine. They still crowd classrooms like bus stations. They still live in darkness during load-shedding. Asset recovery announcements do not cook nshima. They say mining investment will create jobs. My brothers and sisters, mining creates GDP, but small businesses create employment. You cannot employ a nation of millions with machines operated by hundreds. And today they thank you for not protesting during power cuts. But listen carefully: Citizens endured. Government did not succeed, citizens survived. Zambia is not asking for speeches about values. Zambia is asking for systems that work. We refuse a future where people survive while statistics grow. Our message is simple: We will build an economy where opportunity reaches the citizen, not where the citizen waits for opportunity to reach him. Not a nation of promises. A nation of producers.
